Coronation party Kingscroft Rd Woodmansterne

I can remember this day as if it was yesterday. It was the first time I was allowed to mix with the children of Kingscroft Road who were to become such a big part of my childhood.

It was a joint celebration for Kingscroft Road and Beckenshaw Gardens.
I especially remember it as it was the first time I had tasted such a lot of sweet food as we were still in rationing. The jellies in waxed paper dishes were the first I had ever had. I also remember the sponge slices with pink and white icing on top which a lot of the mothers brought on trays covered with tea towels.

We had races in age groups down the straight road. As I ran, my hat flew off and I stopped to pick it up and put it back on only to come last. My disappointed wailing soon stopped on being given another jelly. It was my first paper hat.

I can pick out my mother, Mrs Kemp, in the checked coat with a jug in her hand, Mrs Peasley with Shirley in her arms, Mr Chalk, Mrs Roe, Pauline Ingham, Linda Chitty, Sandra Bowers and so many others. The atmosphere was wonderful; a new Queen, a new chapter. How I wish I could go back to that carefree time.
