Coronation warriors

These four fearsome Roman soldiers were all dressed up and ready to go in 1953, as part of Banstead Junior School’s (and the district’s) coronation celebrations. From l to r are Fraser Hinkley, Alan Collins, John Eyles and Jeremy Hartley.

They were participating in an Elizabethan Cavalcade and Pageant organised by the Banstead District Youth Committee. It processed through the streets of Banstead towards Yewlands Meadow in Woodmansterne Lane on Saturday 13th June 1953, a fortnight after Queen Elizabeth’s coronation. This photograph is kindly supplied by Jeremy Hartley.
