St Mary's Church, Burgh Heath

This damaged postcard shows the interior of St Mary’s church, Burgh Heath. In the bottom right hand corner appears the words “Copyright W Burdekin” and the reference number 6693, and on the back is hand-written “Across Epsom’s down’s this Church”.

An internet search reveals that Burdekin was active with his camera in the early 1900s – particularly, it seems, in Purley. As St Mary’s church was dedicated in January 1909, it’s fair to assume this is one of the earliest interior photographs of the church that has so far come to light.
