Rose Hill school Park Road Banstead
Rose Hill school from 1903 to 1939. Located in Park Road Banstead, this building is now used as offices and is known as Castle House. The photograph is dated 1965.

Hullo John Ll.M. and L.W. I know nothing of the school, but when I worked as a clerk at the South Eastern Gas Board at the bottom of Sutton High Street, I remember this place as the home of the F.S.S.N.H.O.(Cont). We used to maintain gas appliances there. Its full name was Federated Superannuation Scheme for Nurses and Hospital Officers (Contributory)!
Just around the corner in the High Street was the flying-bomb-blasted "Woolpack", where I proposed to my fiancee in October 1953!

Well, having treated her to a ride on the 80A to Tattenham Way and a romantic stroll via Wood lane, Holly Lane and the Cricket field, followed by a Babycham and ham sandwich in The Woolpack, she couldn't easily refuse me! The ride home on top of a new-smelling RT on route 164, to "my" Rose Hill (Sutton) was the icing on the cake. Oh! How we lived-it-up in the 1950's ! We married March 1955.
It'd be great to hear from John Ll.M if he was a boarder at the school, and where he lived at the time. (I was born on the St Helier Estate in 1932).

I have a postal envelope, postmarked 1854, addressed to "W. Brocklesby Esqre, Rook's Nest, Banstead, Surrey". I imagine this was his home before it became the school.
Note from LNW: The original building was a house called Rook's Nest and built in 1770.
The frontage was later considerably extended and the front door moved. The earliest known occupant was Simon Wilmot but it soon passed to the Lambert family who eventually rented it out. Maybe Mr. Brockelsby was staying there at one point.
In 1903 it was purchased by Mr. A. Browning to house his preparatory school and was renamed Rosehill. In 1939, the school was moved to Gloucestershire and the building was used as offices. It has since been modified to include new apartments.

In 1855 there is a baptism entry at All Saints Church for a William Wessels Brocklesby.His parents are registered as William Crowgey Brocklesby and his mother Julia Margaret Brocklesby.He passed away on the 6th March 1908 in Richmond Surrey.

I believe my Great Great Aunt (or some such) was a house maid here in 1911 her name was Violet Codling

I believe Gladys Muriel Florence PATTEN was at the school in 1920/21. Can you confirm or otherwise for me. Gladys was my wife's mother. I have a photo which may or maybe not of a class of girls at a school which again we believe was what we know as Castle House school but I gather it was also known as Rosehill. I believe my grandfather (Stephen Cox) and his brother (Anthony Cox) were educated at this school. Would you still have records of this?
REPLY FROM LNW: Hi Julia, at Banstead History, we do not hold any personal records however I do have several magazines from 1912/13 which I suspect might be too early. The school, and probably any records, moved to Gloucestershire in 1939.
