Winifred Mills née Swan – Dancer/dance teacher

Winifred Swan was born in London in 1910. She trained as a dancer in the Natural Movement Style inspired by Isadora Duncan.

Through the 1930s she ran dance studios in London teaching a wide range of dance styles. She also performed at small venues, arranging recitals of music and dance.

In 1949 she and her husband, Walter Mills, moved to Garden Cottage, High Road, Chipstead, where she ran classes for adults and children. Walter (sometimes Wally) preferred to use Chris as his first name, and worked as a photographer.

Banstead History have been given a collection of photographs from this time, all of which need some serious researching however, we would be delighted to hear from anyone who has memories of Winifred, the studio or any performances. The collection includes many photos of performances some of which are annotated with the performers' names.

The couple left Chipstead in 1957 and emigrated to Rhodesia. They divorced three years later and Winifred returned to England in 1977 and danced and ran classes up until she was 90. She died in South Hams, Devon, in 2006.

We are grateful to Verity, Winifred's niece, for lodging this collection with Banstead History.

I hope this sparks some memories of dancing or performing with Winifred, at Chipstead.

As teenagers in the 1950s my sister Angela and I went to ballroom dancing classes in Miss Swan's studio in the Christmas holidays. We went by bicycle from our home in Old Oak Avenue and I remember the weather was cold with snow the ground.

These classes were where we met other people of the same age and boys(!) in our case. Miss Swan was very strict but we did learn to dance. Sometimes there were dances for us in the nearby Peter Aubertin Hall. After the dancing we went to play table tennis in the tennis club.

My younger sister and I used to go to Miss Swan's on a Saturday morning for natural movement (Greek?)

Later on I went for ballroom dancing lessons - the girls sitting on one side and the boys on the other!! I also remember I once had to dance with Miss Swan - it was amazing - Happy days.

I went to Miss Swan's natural movement classes and I remember performing the Tarantella in a flimsy white tunic with a garland of flowers around my hair. My father took an 8mm film of this I think at Netherne but not sure.

I went to the natural movement classes where we would earn badges ending with white. We wore a white tunic with a gold cord at the waist and danced barefoot.
I remember the ballroom and Scottish dancing lessons in the Peter Aubertin Hall.

On occasion there weren't enough boys and I danced with a girl - this caused me some problems later on when dancing with a boy as I still wanted to lead!

I went most unwillingly to Miss Swans ballroom dancing lessons.
I was so bad that I think I caused her to emigrate!
