Chris crossing the Rhine

In 1960 a group of boys from Banstead County Secondary School in Picquets Way went on a 10-day tour of the Rhineland. They were accompanied by teachers George Ford, Vic Townsend and Graham Harvey.

Here, a pensive Chris Hill is captured on a Rhine ferry. In the background is the Drachenfels, one of the seven hills of the Rhine, with the ruins of a 12th century castle on the summit. At home, Chris and his family lived above the Wheatsheaf pub on the Brighton Road between Garratts Lane and Diceland Road, where his father was landlord for many years.
