I think that photo might be taken in the infants school playground with the girls' Junior playground being on the other side of the railings; the door in the background being the girls' entrance to the school. The entrance to the playground for the infants was in Avenue Road to the right of the picture at right angles to the railings. The junior girls' entrance from the street was adjacent to the infants but on the other side of the fence.

My father, George Corbett, back row 5th from left.
He is now 93 and still living in Banstead.

So if he were born late 1922 and those children look about 5 years old and as the photo was taken in the summer, the year would be 1928 maybe plus or minus a year. Does your father remember any details?

Hello, I wonder if anyone knows the staff members' names from Banstead? I am looking for my Grandmother, Gladys Woodbridge and wondered if, perhaps, she was at either Banstead or Beecholme but cannot find out how to find this information. When Gladys died she left behind an autograph book containing lovely verses from people such as, "Mother", D. Stanmore, A. Wheatly, E. Taylor, Mrs J. Wallen. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if these were the staff names from 1930-1934? I would be grateful for any help. Thanks so much.

Note from LNW: Hi Julie, very interesting question. We have a photograph of members of staff of the Village School from the early 1930's. The names are: Mr Bullard, Mr Carpenter, Miss Staddon, Mrs Woods, Edward Gale and Helen Day.

Thank you for that LNW. Is the village school just that; a village school, not the Banstead school/home for poor children of the time or is that a different place altogether?

Reply from LNW: The two are very different and neither still exists. The village school was replaced by Waitrose in Banstead High Street in 1990, and Beechholme (previously Kensington and Chelsea district School) was replaced by a housing estate in the early 1970's. You can find more information on both on our sister site www.bansteadhistory.com.
